Chico and Rita

March 24, 2011

I would like to share with you my review about the last film I have watched and enjoyed a lot. It is an atypical cartoon movie for adults, directed by Xavi Mariscal and Trueba, it is filled with deep magic, explosive colour and marvellous soundtrack by Bebo Valdes.

The story is located from Habana to  New York,  Paris, Hollywood and Las Vegas , a nice walk within peculiar cities, which take us into a colourful world. The movie starts in Cuba, just before Castro revolution and ends in  today´s Habana. The plot is based on the relationship between a poor Cuban pianist and a pretty jazz singer girl with a marvellous voice, who met him in a nigthclub in the Habana´s Harbour. However, a time later they will play together in the most famous clubs in NewYork and other towns, but it will not be so idilic.

What I liked best about this movie is the excellent soundtrack, and the magic of the coloured scenes with meticulous details which evoque that dreamy golden period, and what is more, all thouse details as motels, markets, gardens, cinemas, streets,…are exactly drawn like they were at that time. The film is vey well directed , with some jokes, as Mariscal, and Trueba appear in one scene with Estrella Morente and Chico.

Summing up, it is a delicious film with historical events,  fantastic music,  and even sad touches, which I enjoyed so much

It seems to be a suitable Love Story, I want to watch it specially to listen it . Even if they sing traditional songs I love anyway. I love listening sung songs by different singer which go on with Bebo Valdés ´ piano , so much the better.
