Nobel Prize for Medicine Quote

October 19, 2010

I would like to share with all of you  a quote by the Nobel Prize for Medicine, the Brazilian Oncologist Drauzio Varella:

In today’s world five times more time and money is being invested in drugs for male virility and silicone implants for women, than in the cure of Alzheimer’s disease ..
In a few years to come we’ll have grammas with large breasts and grandpas with hard penis, but they won’t remember what they’re for.
Just take a moment and think about your priorities. It is a pity that diseases such as  Alzheimer are so forgotten.

I want to think that the scientists are really working to solve diseases as Alzheimer , cancer ,anorexia and others. In fact the Nobel Prize for Medicine has been to this oncologist Drauzio Varella.
Other matter is in what the people, in general, invest their money and what is the most interesting for pharmaceutical industry.

Ha, Ha, How right he is! It seems so stupid, doesn’t it? Great quote Trini, thanks for sharing it with us.

    Hi m3lim.

Very interesting, however Drauzio Varella is not a laureate of Nobel Prize.

actually, the money spent in meds for erection and implants is money from people who wants to use this, the research was done already and was not as much pricy as the cost of alzheimer research, this person is playing with populism and false statistics

He is not a Nobel Prize winner AND he is not even right. He is comparing money values in different units. Research funding corresponds to about 5% of total healthcare costs (in the US: http://www.researchamerica.org/uploads/healthdollar10.pdf, it must be even lower in other countries). So comparing the amount of money that people spend in virility medicine and silicone implants to the total amount in Alzheimer’s disease (or any other disease) is like comparing the amount of money people spend buying cars to the amount of money invested in fuel research. Like Dr. Cualquiera said, “[he] is playing with populism and false statistics”

He may be wrong about the way he is using the statistics but if Alzheimer research does not catch up the rest of the statement is very plausible.
