Jim’s new job

October 25, 2011

Jim was terribly bored with his daily routine and often wondered if he should change jobs. Finally he decided to find a challenging new one.
So, he first asked his friends which one of the major companies in Spain would be the best to apply for. He got some replies like “Don’t mind the company. I’m a long-term unemployed; I wish I had a job, whatever it be!”, “Sorry, I can’t help you; I’m self-employed!”, “ having a job is the most important thing, it doesn’t matter what it is”, and so on.
As he didn’t get satisfied with his friends’ responses he decided to find it out by himself. He got the list of the top ten corporations in Spain from the Internet: Atento, Novartis, Ikea, Vodafone, Mutua Madrileña, Wolters Kluwer, Bankinter, …; he sent his CV but none of them contracted him.
Then, he looked for companies in England in the same way and got the “Great Place to Work” list: Baringa Partners, Danone, Impact International, Microsoft, Novo Nordisk, …; he sent his CV but none of them contracted him.
The following country was France: Pepsico, Microsoft France, Leroy Merlin, …; none of them contracted him.
He tried with Germany as well, and later with Belgium, Finland and Switzerland but he has not been successful at all.

In the end he gave up his dream of working for a great company. But he has just found a job and nowadays belongs to the staff of a little restaurant named “Comidas Pepe” whose owner is a cousin of his father’s. Jim is happy working as a waiter although actually he is the whole staff at the restaurant!

It doesn´t matter how big and important your company is, the most important thing is being happy wherever you work and that your work makes you feel satisfied and contented.

I know a lot of people unhappy working in companies on the top of “best worwing place” ranking. By contrast, I know a considerable amount of people happy in their job, in companies far enough to smell the ranking mentioned.

Obviously! It’s important the enviroment in your company but the most important thing to be satisfied with your job is being satisfied with yourself. So it’s up to you.

It’s not important where you work.
The salary and a work-life balance are important but I think that the two most important things at work are: being comfortable and feeling satisfied.
From my point of view, being comfortable at work not only means getting on well with the boss and the workmates but also working without big problems or pressure, and feeling satisfied means enjoying working and being proud of the work done.

A job in a big and important company would be very interesting, above all beacause you have the opportunity to work with many people, but it is not always like this, beacause at the same time in that places you can find many competence and the atmosphere it´s no good and you feel alone, so it´s worthy to work in job where yo feel really happy. The size it´s not the most important.

Nowadays, people are looking for a job anywhere and being happy at work at the same time it’s difficult to match. So I prefer being happy with my job, for unimportant or smal it is. Surely, have a job is very important. whichever it is, so try to be happy!

Thank you John for this story. It probably reflects the situation of many young people in Spain at the moment. I agree with all the comments too, job satisfaction is so important, but I suppose the most important thing for many people just now will be to have a job, just that.
