Dukan’s diet, true or false?

October 20, 2011

I am sure you have heard about it, haven’t you? If your answer is not, I’ll tell you something about it…

From 2001 more than two million readers around the world have chosen this slimming method. The number of followers hasn’t increased because of word of mouth. All the international press agree about his impact an  they call this the  “Dukan’s Phenomenon”. He has put three books on sale, and has his own web  with a personal coach, if you want.

Dr.Dukan divides his diet in four phases:

1.Attack phase with inmediate results. You can only eat proteins.

2.A cruise phase, during these days the diet alternates pure proteins + vegetables.

3.A consolidation phase about 10 days per kg lost. It’s the gradual return of pleasurable foods with two festive meals.

4. A definitive stabilization. It’s for all your life with the purpose of keeping your ideal weight.

But like all things in this life, there are other nutritionist specialist that think the opposite. They said that Dukan’s diet is a swindle and it won’t last a long time.

On the other hand, this is an unbalanced slimming method. It’s said that we need to eat all types of nutrients, so we have to go on eating a varied menú.

I must confess I did this diet, well, I tried it. I did the two first phases but after this I didn’t have the will to carry on. The fact is that I lost four kilos but I didn’t  feel fit so I gave up. Now I’ve decided to eat healthy food and do some exercise, it’s the best.

Hi Loles, I also disagree with the diet above. It seems that the only purpose of it is to get slimmer people. But who cares about health? It’s commonly known that we all need to eat proteins, glucids and lipids; It is, we need a balanced-diet. Moreover, we have to keep in mind that depending on the food we eat, it will have a big impact on our mental health.
I know people who are doing Dunkan’s diet…they think they have discovered the best diet in the world…Nevertheless, I really recommend you an active lifestyle doing sport such as jogging and eating a balanced diet plan.

From my point of view Duncan’s diet is another of the “miracle diets” based perhaps on forbidden food or maybe on differentiated food. It doesn’t matter. We should rebel against the cult of the body and consumerism associated with it.

I agree with you… I think that a healthy lifestyle is more important than to be slim. Eating varied food and doing sport is the key. I know people that after doing similar diets based on proteins, they started to have allergic reactions to some kind of food because their digestive system forgot how to digest it correctly.

I think that most of us know how we should eat and that we should do exercice to keep feet and healthy but…. who haven’t done a diet in her/his life? When i was younger i did some of them but now you realise that not every diet is good for your body.
I heard on the news that a nutricionist denounced dunkan’s diet so…. I dont exactly know if i would trust it or not

Noe, I have to confess I have never ever followed a diet, but for the wrong reasons: I LIKE FOOD SO MUCH!

As you see, Loles, your post is becoming quite popular. I’d love to have a nicer looking body, but if that means depriving myself from eating things I love I don’t think I’ll ever be slender.

I’ve followed a diet once, I lost some weight but I promised it was the first time and the last one I do it, because I think the same as Marisa. Eating is a pleasure!!

I’ve already heard about Dukan’s diet and, from my point of view, it’s very unhealthy. In spite of this, it has become very popular. I remember once I went to buy a special kind of cheese to the supermarket and one of the employees told me that it was sold out because it was in great demand due to Dukan’s diet! Unbelievable.

    Hello
Yeah, eating is a great pleasure!
I used to be a bit fat when I was a little girl, so I know how bad you feel when you are on a diet. After depriving myself for a long time, supervised for a nutritionist, I became, almost,a vegetarian, and was going to a gym as well. Well, it was in my early 20s to 30s. Therefore, I properly can advice if you tend to put on weight, as I do, better to go an excellent nutritionist and not to try “miracle diets” for the sake of you.

Dunkan’s diet has been fiercely criticized by other nutritionists. One of them, Dr. David Katz, a Yale University nutritionist, cautioned that “yo-yo” diets can be harmful and said one of the problems of a high-protein diet is loss of water in the body. Jean Michel Cohen, another French nutritionist, suggests in his book “Savoir Maigrir” 1,600 calories a day diet based on in a variety of food. He said that Duncan’s diet is dangerous because can increase cholesterol, create cardiac problems even breast cancer.

I´ve heard already about this diet, but sincerely I really hate diets. I guess it´s important enjoy life meanwhile we make small daily efforts like exercising and having healthy food. It´s a matter of life habits not monthly diets.

Much to my dismay, I always find myself following a diet! So when I heard about Dukan’s diet I tried to inform about it.
As far as I can understand about nutrition, and from a favorable point of view, this diet is good just to lose those 5 or 6 kg we put on after big events like Christmas or Summer.
But, from a negative point of view, it is said that you need to do it when you are both physically and mentally strong, note that, especially during the first phase, there is no contribuition of carbohydrates or fats which give us a great amount of easy energy!

But, in general, and as all of you have said before, the better way to have a fit body is to eat healthy (I’ll add to have healty habits) and practice some exercise regularly!

I can say the the Dukan Diet is overvalued and is not as good as it promises to be. I’d followed Dukan Diet for a while and the only thing I discovered is that it is a very strict regime that don’t give the results that promise. In my case through the experimentation with myself I discovered the food that I can eat without have problems with my weight. Today at day I’m in my ideal weight, I make exercise 3 or 4 times per week half an hour every day. I’m in shape, healthy and happy and all this without “the help” of the Dukan Diet.

    This is my testimony.

    Regards.
