The first lab human heart , ready to beat at the end of the year

Still do not beat or pump blood, but in the Gregorio Marañon Hospital in Madrid there are eight human hearts ready . They are bioartificial organs, made from the original structure of a heart that has been stripped of all cardiac cells to leave bare. After inoculation of Stem Cells the heart backs to life. At least that is what has occurred in animal experiments.

The Gregorio Marañón aims to manage a bank with “templates” or structures of human and animal organs ready for transplant and tailored to each patient. After that will be enough to take stem cells from a patient and repopulate one of these patterns for a new organ nor with a risk of rejection by the body neither waiting lists. Several research groups worldwide are working on this line, but Madrid has become the first city to be encouraged to create a laboratory for this purpose only. Installed in the basement of the new hospital building, has received an initial investment of 600,000 euros and the support of the Community of Madrid, the Ministry of Science and the National Transplant Organization (ONT).

The first was a mouse heart.

Fernández-Avilés cardiologist will head a team of ten people who are working  in close collaboration with the University of Minnesota and Dr. Doris Taylor. This research was the first to get a bioartificial mouse heart capable of beating and pumping blood. After that Taylor moved the research to human organs in Spain. With the team of Gregorio Marañón, were the first to eliminate all cells of a human heart and keep only its structure. This first step to creating artificial organ was first last May. Six months later, there are eight hearts ready and one more in process.

The next step is to grow stem cells in one of these perfect templates that only nature provides to check if it is functional. That will happen before year’s end, although Taylor’s opinion “could make it next week.” Six months later she may try the first transplants in animals and in five years to prove with the first patient.

The team Gregorio Marañón has clear time, not so much the type of cells used to repopulate and customize each organ. “We should discuss whether the source of stem cells is fat, bone marrow, the heart itself or maybe if you chose to reprogrammed cells, Fernandez-Aviles said. First generate Hearts – “the organ that we know best” – and after livers, kidneys and other organs.

    I think if this discovery works, it will help and save a lot of people. I’m fascinated of how the sciencie is advancing, maybe, in 10 or 15 years scientists will develop all the vital organs by using this techniques. As far as I’m concerned, it will mean that people who are waiting for a transplant won’t have to keep in neverending queues and what is most important for me, the hope of these people will increase a lot.

    This is a really interesting achievement!!. The Gregorio Marañon Hospital, in which scientits are doing important researchs, is pioneering in research work.
    There are always some multinationals which are going after these significant successes with financial objectives.
    What I am triyng to say is I hope everybody can receive an organ when they really need it.
