Does time travel already exist?

November 2, 2010

The other day while browsing the Internet I came across this video. It has around 4 million views.

In the video George Clarke a film director from Belfast says that while watching the DVD extras of Charles Chaplin’s “The Circus” he discovered something shocking; there is a moment where you can see a woman walking down the street talking to what it appears to be a mobile phone device.

Nowadays this isn’t that surprising but we have to bear in mind that the footage is from the premiere of the film in 1928 and it is impossible that anybody had a mobile phone, or is it?

In the video George Clarke says that the only explanation that he has come up with is that the woman is a time traveller and that she wanted to appear in the video as some kind of prove or to get recognition as a time traveller.

After watching the video myself I think this is some kind of joke or a stunt to get free publicity (if  that is the case I think they have succeeded, 4,5 million views in 9 days), but who knows maybe…

What do you all think??? Could it be true or is this a very clever joke?

If you want a good laugh you should read the comments on the YouTube page, some of them are hilarious!

This could be very interesting if telephone haven´t been discovered yet; because telephone was discovered in 1820, more or less, and the first mobile phone appeared in 1983, so in my opinion Chaplin could be a visionary in 1928, but the woman isn´t an spectrum…

And under science point of view this couldn´t be possible, although scientist are trying to travel by the time, nowadays we know that matter could travel to the future but never to the past, so time traveler machines probably will never exist.

Virginia I´ve been reading the comments..hahaha
    this is one theory:

“That is defenitely an iPod touch 4G not an iPhone. She is calling to the future over wifi

(She gets the wifi from the future) she was probably gonne video call her boyfriend!!!!”

Fortunately people aren´t believe that theory; probably it is an assembly, but I haven´t seen he film so I support the theory that Chaplin was a visionary 😀

Well, it would certainly be interesting if it did already exists.

It feels like time travelleing will never be possible. Then again, two hundred years ago we felt that way about flying!!

Science has shown us yet that it´s impossible a time travel to the past, not to the future; it isn´t the same that flying because Da Vinci could fly, humans had need an engineering development to fly, the problem is that science has shown us yet that matters only travel to the future

    Hi Marta!!
Why do you say that Science has shown us yet that it is impossible travel to the past not to the future??.
Do you know any research about your affirmation?. Please let me know about it, I am interested in goog scientist bibliography. See you in class!!

Trini this question is answered with the relativity theory, I´m going to try to explain it but I don´t know if I will do it well…

The question is that in relativity theory objects are able to travel with a high speed, so they can reach the speed of light, I must remember that speed of light is the fastest speed. So If an object would be accelerated in the space with a high speed, the rhythm of the time would be decelerate for the object; so for an observer, for example, that it is on The Earth, the object will be traveling so fast, but since the object system reference it is traveling more slowly; in conclusion, if we could ask to the object while is traveling what time is it, for us will be before that for it.

And about the question of traveling to the past, it isn´t possible because it´s so difficult develop with a theory.

I don´t know if you have understand what I mean, If you want, you can read some Stephen Hawking articles. Speaking about the topic of traveling in the time has been a heresy during a long time; nowadays some scientists, in my opinion, aren´t very wary.

Thank you so much for your answer. Ican tell that your opinion is based in Einstein’s Relativite Theory, so interesting. However, althoug this Theoriy is completely determineited in Phisical Science, sometimes Time Travel appears in phases, without scientist research; but who knows? perhaps we are rounded by travel passangers!!! ha ha

The woman was talking into a hearing aid, back then they were around that size.

Intriguing footage, my opinion is that it is a publicity stunt, after all, the chap is a director and the poster for his new film is prominently displayed as he is talking.

Martamarit has tried to use relativity to debunk the idea of time travel into the past, in short, the theory of relativity indicates that as you travel at faster speeds (I mean speeds significantly approaching the speed of light) you become shorter, heavier and time passes more slowly for you. Unless you are a massless particle, that would indicate that when you hit the speed of light, you become infinitesimally small and infinitely heavy, so the energy required to accelerate you beyond the speed of light would be in finitely high …

But I am not sure why the focus for time travel is usually on relativity and the speed of light for time travel, surely it is more about quantum mechanics. Heisenberg’s Uncertainty Principle means that an atom is everywhere at all times, however, it is governed by a distribution curve with a very sharp and high peak which defines when and where the atom exists in the non quantum world. Shift the peak and you shift to a different time (and potentially different place so could this quantum shift also be the basis of teleportation?). Easy? I doubt it, it would probably take more energy that could be generated to transport a bloke in drag back to the 1920s.

But who knows what is to come in the future. By the time the thorny issue of time travel is solved, would people be using mobile telephones anyway?

So in short, this is a well conceived and well executed publicity stunt … hats off to George and his team. I hope his film does well!

I really hope in my life time travel becomes a possibility. What an interesting subject! Love the vid.

yes time travel must exist in the name of god

Interesting time travel is a tricky topic all though this video is interesting there could be ways it’s not true and ways it is true one way it could be fake is no one seems to notice you would think they would ask or make some sort of reaction to this woman (but like the Doctor says humans don’t pay attention) It maybe true it looked like a IPhone and she seemed to smile when she looked at the camera as if she new but if it’s a IPhone it would mean it will be invented soon sometime between maybe 2013-2018 because IPhone will most likely be going till then at least it was a sort of thin phone IPhone 4 looking also I read a theory were a man claims he found the key to it he demonstrated it on a fan by making it go faster than it was capable of going by speeding up the space around it he said that if he had 14,000 wats of power it maybe capable of ripping a hole in space and time

But there is a condition for getting welcome money. Should really ask the casino dealer to reach for you are going to is far. The room was clean and comfortable, area service menu was expensive. http://newjerseyonlinecasino.weebly.com/blog.html
