I am very interested to know what you do to keep healthy? Can you share any tips or advice  with us? Also, what keeps you healthy or helps you get better when you’ve been ill? Have you tried any “alternative remedies”? Have they worked?

    First of all, I try to do some sport. I usually go to the gym twice a week. I think it is better to do things that you like. I mean, for instance, I don’t like running at all, so I go to funky classes or dancing stuff because I love dancing, although I’m not very good! But I think that what really matters is that you have fun. And this is a very important clue to keep on doing sport!
    Another main point to keep healthy, and what I do, is not to eat too much junk food or ready-to-eat food, which is to say that is better to spend time at home cooking proper meals. You’ll find that food cooked by you, tastes better than anything!
    I don’t usually pick up illnesses, I only catch a cold sometimes. In this case, the best thing to do is stay home and have some hot soup. Or if I have a sore throat, I have a cup of hot milk with honey, it’s delicious and makes me feel better.

    Keeping healthy is something very important for everybody, so I think we have to take seriously all that we do and eat.
    As Nadia, I go to the gym twice a week to be fit. Although this is not the only reason, there are others. For example, I enjoy doing it and when I’ve had an stressful day I forget everything and it relaxes me.
    Sport helps you to feel good, to enrich your social life,etc… So you can practise the sport that you want such us walking, jogging, cycling and much more.

    However, doing sport is not enough to be healthy. We have to take care of our food. It’s good to eat of everything (sweets, fat, dried fruit and nuts…) but with moderation,it’s important to keep a balanced diet.

    Personally, I think that doing sport and taking care of your food help you to be strong and in case you get ill it helps you to recover faster, apart from taking the medicines that your doctor prescribes you, of course. But when you only have a caugh or your throat hurts it’s good to eat oranges, lemon with honey or milk with honey, burnt sugar…you know, all those traditional home remedies. They work!

    Well, Just this moment is not the best for me to talk about keeping healthy related to practise some sport. It´s a long time since I haven´t done any sport. It´s awful but it´s the truth.
    Before I´ve been Mammy I used to go to the gym mainly I did aerobic because I like music and dancing so it is a mixture and I thoroughly enjoyed it . As soon as possible I´ll take up again, I´ve promised myself.
    I strongly believe that keeping healthy is the ideal state of a person. It brings balance between fitness and frame of mind. Both of them are so important.
    Talking about frame of mind, it is easy for me to know how get on with when I feel a bit sad or have problems and can´t find the way out. I have a chat with a friend who is a therapist, but not an usual one. He works with my energy and gives me an explanation why I feel like this and that… For me is highly helpful and I trust on him.
    As I said before, in my opinion the balance is the secret of happiness.

    Without any doubt if you want to be healthy you should take care of your lifestyle and it is quite easy to tell it, but not so easy to do it, why I said that?, because I am not the most appropriate person to give advices, since I am not doing so many things by myself.
    Well, in my case I like running, and I am used to run twice a week so it is quite good to be as fit as a fiddle, or at least to try.
    But, we do not have to forget that mental health is just as important as physical health, so we have to be careful with that, because nowadays we are so stressful, that’s the reason why we have to search for measures to takeover this problem, Just doing something as simple as a reading a book for example.
    In my personal opinion, I think, we have to pay attention to our diet, tell me what you eat and I will tell you what you are.
    It is so important to have a very rich and variety diet. I mean you should eat vegetables, fish, fruits almost every day.
    We should also drink plenty of water daily. Doctors recommend that we should drink at least 8 glasses of water daily. Other than keeping you hydrated, water helps to keep your skin healthy and helps with blood flow. It also clean our system.

    We should avoid to smoke, I am sure, you know that one of the major causes of death (such as cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung disease are coming from tobacco.

    We should to cut it out alcoholic drinks it would be very convenient for our health.

    For sure, I would not forget to talk about sleeping, because as far as I concerned, I think is very important especially in my case, when I sleep well I feel better and more optimistic. Getting a good night’s sleep can lessen the number of times you get sick. When you sleep you allow your body to rest from al the days activity.

    When I feel as if I was as at death’s door, not so many often at all, I am going to the doctor and he prescribe me some pills and I try to follow all his advices, but to be honest I do not like so much going to the doctor .About to have new alternatives to get better when you are ill, I do not know but people say that the measures of our grandmothers always work.

    In conclusion, we can prevent having diseases and we can be healthier but it is our responsibility, it is in our hands, in depends of our lifestyle and the choices that we make.

    Yes, Mónica, we do need to take seriuously what we do and eat. I am glad you find it relaxing when you go to the gym. I agree with you that we have to take care about what we eat and we should eat a bit of everything. In Scotland they add a wee drum to the lemon and honey.

    I have to confess that this year I am feeling very lazy and I am not doing anything at all for taking care of myself and my body and mind are begining to protest. I think everybody has mentioned the principal rules to keep healhty and I agree completely with all of them: to eat properly, to do some exercise,to sleep enough hours every day(something sometimes not so easy) and not to smoke, well, at least I am not a smoker. I will try to follow all of them again, it´s one my New Year proposals.

    I have always liked open air sports, trecking, running, swimming.. I don´t like very much the gyms although I have found very effective yoga and pilates and a good aerobic session can be also very distressful.

    As Lidia I also think balance is very important, mind and body are in the same pack and each person has to find out the way to get it.

    In my case I try to respect two main statements which for me are sacred:
    – The food you eat it’s something to take care about because after oxygen it’s what makes you still alive and grow (when you are a child). You eat at least three times a day during all your life, so you should realise what’s better for you and know what’s unhealthy.
    – The way I see is our body as a machine, if you don’t do exercise it’s impossible it works properly. In addition it’s proven that sportsman or sportswomen haver get les often ill than sedentary people.
    It’s known that this previous advices are not a 100% effective solution because there are plenty others factors, however, it’s a really useful tool for illness prevention. I would recommend it.
    Finally, I would like to notice that there are many kinds of medicines arround the world because of the different development of cultures and civilitations wich most of them are not very known but they have been assinting people since 5000 years ago. There are always alternatives, it’s a consolation.

    Reading all your commentaries I have realized that I need to change my way of life…I do not practise any sport and in addition my food is based on the frozen ones, you know ready-to-eat food. As Amparocala it is going to be one of my New Year proposal…
    I agree with my companions in whom the important thing to be kept healthy is to eat well, to sleep well and to practise sports.And also not smoke…Ah!and of course if you don`t want to get a cold or a flu eat valencian oranges…Jaja!!It looks like an advertisement!!
    And a thing that has not been said and is important, is that we have to laugh more, being happy is essential to confront the life…And we don´t have to allow problems overcome us…This is my tip…

    This is true! I totally agree with esthercosta, laughing is basic to feel good. Don’t you ever happen to feel as if anything can’t go wrong after lauthing? It’s great!
    But one thing that also it’s important is to cry, it’s a way of taking out all your sadness or worries if you have. Don’t keep it inside yourself…

    Firstly, to be honest, I am not very good at doing “healthy things” and normally it does not even mind me at all. I do not like eating fruits and vegetables and I like so much the products of the pig (althoug it is recently said that if it is an ibericus one its products are very healthy, the bad news is that it is more expensive). During the last four years I have passed by two pregnancys and their corresponding breast-feedeing periods and despite I tried to eat more fish, fruit and vegetables, my body was always demanding me other “good” things that before that moment I used to eat with moderation in order to keep my weigh, but my weigh was going to change anyway, so eat what you want and forget your shape!…… Finally thanks to God or to a good genetics I only improved my weigh in ten or twelve kg and my children and I are all very healthy, only a couple of caughs or a throat pain every winter that I treat with traditional remedies and staying at home.
    Even though this is my year to become a healthier person: I am in the way to recover the shape I had before being a mum so I am trying to eat properly and I also have discovered pilates. I am attending classes two days in a week and till now, only in three months I think it is working.
    To sum up, doing exercise, having a balanced diet, not smoking and drinking alcohol with moderation are my advice to keep your body in good conditions. If you add doing relaxing things as reading books, going for a walk or to the cinema and having a good time with your family or friends you will avoid also mental diseases very common nowadays because of our stresful way of live.

    Hi everybody
    Of course I agree it that a healthy lifestyle is a combination between practicing sports, your diet and mental health and I also think that there are connections between them.
    When I came back home after a mouth in Ireland last August, I realized that my health had changed. What is more, my figure was not as fit as it used to be and my doctor told me that my cholesterol level was extremely high.
    After that, I decided to change my lifestyle. Nowadays I go to the gym twice a week or go out to run for 20 minutes. I have also reduced the amount of fat and sweets I eat, and I have improved fish and vegetables in my diet. Believe me, I feel much better, but I know that the most difficult thing is to be steadfast.
    There is an alternative remedy made with barley and olive’s leaves to reduce your cholesterol. You have to boil them together during 15 minutes and drink the potion during 9 days. I can’t remember the proportions but if you are interested ask me and I´ll try to find the original recipe.

    For normal people with good health as me the important thing is to keep it in good balance. So the keynote might be just taking care of us. I think there are no precisely rules; it is more a matter of learning a personal way. We must to try to know ourselves and work it out the best we can. General speaking doing exercise, eating properly, sleeping well, having social communication or spending time doing things you like it can help us in it.
    Personally I try to swim twice a week, and to go walking or cycling everywhere as well. Although sometimes I am a bit lazy, I try to do it whenever I can, because then I feel good. About food at home we like cooking and eating healthy products. So it isn’t a big deal to consume lots of fish, vegetables or fruits. We have the habit of cooking and do not mind losing a little time in the kitchen making something delicious to share with family or friends. About the rest since I was young I always need to sleep enough, so my social life and my interests cannot take up too much at night, if I want to be a person the next day. But I also like being alone and gardening give me a chance to kill two birds with one stone. I like gardens and visit them, one of the most beautiful I have seen is Sissinghurst garden in Kent.     I have two different ways to keep my healthy: on the one hand, I try not to eat animal fat, not to drunk fizzy soft drinks or not to drink too much alcohol. On the other hand, I try to do sport almost every day because I have backache and spinal column problems. It consists of doing, mainly, strechings exercises and to touch one’s toes.

    Before I used to go swimming twice o three times at week all year, but, nowadays, I do it only in summer. I changed this sport because of my timetable and I began to go running few times at week. I really have some problems to maintain this pace of sports because the good intentions can be broken by more urgent things.

    By the moment, I continue making exercise, but, mainly, I try to go running when I can because I think it’s the most relaxing and complete sport I know –except, perhaps, swimming.

    Hi everybody,
    I suposse that I´m the last, so you have written all the facts that are important to be healthy, all of them are really important to feel yourself well but at the same time I have to recognize that it´s too hard to keep one´s balance. It´s easy to write it hier but more difficult to put in practise: it´s hard to have a diet, above all if you like to eat well, it´s complicate to find free time to go to the gym beacause we work a lot of time. I´m not a smoker, but I have realized that all the people that smoke have many problems to leave it, so you have to make a steady effort and above all to be constant everyday to have a good result. If you get all of this and many other things you will be healthy but don´t forget what Esthecosta, Nadia and Lidia said, you have to laugh, cry … express your feeligs and be happy with yourself. That it´s the main rule!

    I agree with all the things you all have written. I think that anybody doubts about how important is the sport and healthy food in our lives…normally, if you practise sport very often and you take care about your food, you feel healthier. We all now that nowadays we don’t have all the time we would like to have. But I think that we have to make an effort to get a little time for our health.

    But I have something more to add about how to keep us healthy: resting. I think one of the most important things is to rest. To sleep minimum 8 hours per night, and, when it’s possible, to make a little siesta. Our bodies need rest, and sometimes we don’t give them all the rest they need. And for me it’s one of the most important things! Having a rest or sleeping well (and enough) give us energy, health and a smile to start or continue the day 🙂
