FILM COLLOQUIUM

I’d like to invite you all to make proposals for an afternoon out at the cinema and then a colloquium while having a drink in a cosy pub. How do you like it? I found a list of “must see” and though the titles are in Spanish I’m sure we can see them in English at Babel or Albatros. Please post your film preferences with the title that you’d give to the colloquium. Here is my list:

1. La clase
2. Vals con Bashir
3. Gran Torino
4. Los abrazos rotos
5. Slumdog millionaire
6. The visitor
7. Watchmen
8. The reader
9. Captain Abu Raid
10. En el séptimo cielo

Last Saturday’s film was “Grand Torino”, with Clint Eastwood in front of and behind the camera. Do you remember Dirty Harry and his Magnum Colt? Imagine now the same character forty years later, retired and living in a run- down neighbourhood, surrounded by Asian immigrants, street gangs and violence. He is a racist, lonely and bitter man, and his relationship with his two sons is far from being ideal (in fact, it is horrible). Whatever it seems from what I have said up to now, it is a tender story, full of humour and bitterness, both in similar proportion. If you liked “Million Dolar Baby” or “Mystic River”, this movie is also a portrait of desperate people, with no prospects, trying to fight his way through a very hard reality everyday. I liked it very much.
